Emily K. Cooper

Emily Cooper
Attorney Emily K. Cooper is a 1996 honors graduate from the University of Minnesota Law School.  In her 14 years of practice she has worked with clients and companies at all levels.  She practiced in the area of civil litigation and family law while an associate at a major law firm in Ohio.  She spent five years working in the corporate world as in-house counsel for a multi-billion dollar corporation, focusing on contract negotiations and drafting.  As Executive Director of the Minnesota Volunteer Attorney Program, she worked to encourage and recruit attorneys to volunteer to provide pro bono representation to low income clients.  She also worked for three years as a staff attorney for a legal aid organization where she represented low income, abused and disabled individuals.

In 2010, Ms. Cooper was appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court's Committee for Equality and Justice.  She has also been appointed to the Hennepin County Probate and Mental Health Court's Guardianship/Conservatorship Attorney Panel and is Appointed Counsel for respondents in Civil Commitments in Sherburne County.  Ms. Cooper accepts cases from Anoka Judicare for low-income individuals in family law matters.  She accepts low-income family law cases through the Hennepin County Bar Association's Low-Fee Family Law Panel.  She volunteers monthly at the Hennepin County Bar Association's Legal Access Point at the Hennepin County Government Center.  At Legal Access Point, she provides free 20-minute consultations for people on a variety of legal issues.  Ms. Cooper is also a volunteer attorney with Chrysalis/Tubman in the area of family law.

Recently, Ms. Cooper was instrumental in creating a new Legal Clinic with the Lyndale Neighborhood Association in South Minneapolis.  The Legal Clinic will provide free legal consultations on a monthly basis to community members on a variety of legal topics.

Helping clients to achieve their goals in an economical manner and with high quality legal representation is what Ms. Cooper strives for in her cases.  She offers unbundled services for pro se litigants.  This option allows clients to handle some of their case on their own while she helps with the difficult or technical aspects of the case such as drafting documents and appearing in court with clients.  For low-income clients, Ms Cooper provides sliding-scale fee services so that clients of modest means can have legal representation regardless of economic status.  Finally, Ms. Cooper's normal hourly rate is a very reasonable amount so that those who are not low-income but wish to be represented in all aspects of a case will be able to afford her services without facing economic hardship.

Ms. Cooper's experience makes her a unique attorney for her clients.  She has seen cases from all sides and represented a wide variety of client types.  Her practice has included complex litigation issues and trial work as well as alternative dispute resolution and settlement strategy.  She brings this knowledge to her case work and focuses on family law and social security disability claims at Cooper & Reid, LLC.  As the managing partner for Cooper & Reid, LLC, Ms. Cooper works hard to assure that all cases are handled professionally and with personal attention and care.
